Catholic Education Week 2018: Discovering New Horizons

The theme has been aligned with the official Year of Youth theme for 2018 and is derived from a speech given by Pope Francis at World Youth Day 2016 where he called young people and the Church to ‘open new horizons for spreading joy’.

This theme will allow schools to easily integrate Catholic Education Week activities and materials with Year of Youth programs.

Nominations open for the 2017 Spirit of Catholic Education Awards

Nominations have opened for this year’s Spirit of Catholic Education Awards which are run annually in conjunction with Catholic Education Week celebrations.

Each year Catholic school communities and agencies are encouraged to nominate individuals in the community (staff member, parent, clergy or volunteer) who are making an outstanding contribution to the life of the community in one or more of the prescribed areas.

This year Spirit of Catholic Education Award recipients will be presented with their awards as part of the official launch of Catholic Education Week which will be held in the Diocese of Cairns on Wednesday 26 July 2017.

All information regarding the awards can be found on the Catholic Education Week website.  Nominations should be submitted by Friday 12 May 2017.

Sharing the Journey

The idea of journey as a central theme has been drawn from a number of quotes from Pope Francis as well as a number of biblical references. Pope Francis has said:

Today, we need a Church capable of walking at people’s side, of doing more than simply listening to them; a Church which accompanies them on their journey.

The whole journey of life is a journey of preparation…to see, to feel, to understand the beauty of what lies ahead, of the homeland towards which we walk.

What is important is the whole journey by which we arrive at the mission the Lord entrusts to us.

We hope this information will assist with forward-planning and that as a Catholic education community in Queensland we can embrace this theme for celebrations in 2017.

Song celebrating Catholic Education in Queensland released

A new song celebrating Catholic education in Queensland has been released.

The song, titled ‘Catholic Schools in Queensland’, is a celebration of the work and achievements of Queensland’s 300 Catholic schools and will form a central part of this year’s Catholic Education Week festivities.

Catholic School Authorities in each of the five dioceses, together with the Queensland Catholic Education Commission (QCEC), engaged song writer, music producer and film maker Josh Arnold to create the song.

Under the banner of his production company Small Town Culture, Arnold designs and produces projects for schools, communities and various organisations throughout regional Australia.

Josh will familiarise students from Catholic schools around the state with the song during his planned tour of Queensland during July.

Resources for using the song can be accessed on the Song page of the Catholic Education Week website.
